Tis section has information about general apartment care. Taking care of carpeting, general floor cleaning, kitchen and health issues.
Carpeting: If your apartment is carpeted you should own or have access to a vacuum. You should try to vacuum at least once a week to keep the area free of debris, which can be further lodged into the carpet and create difficult clean-up conditions. If a spill occurs, flush the area with cold water and soak it up with some paper towels. If certain liquids, like red juice, are left to dry in a carpet they can cause permanent damage. Carpets should be shampooed at least once per year, either personally or by a professional; usually landlords will take care of this at the end of the lease term.
General Floors: Floors should be swept daily and mopped at least once a week.
Walls: Make sure to check what you can do to the walls. Paint, nails, tacks or other alterations could be prohibited in the lease terms, and violation of those could result in loss of the security deposit or worse.
Cupboards: Cupboards should be cleaned weekly and spills should be dealt with immediately; failure to do so could attract bugs or create mold.
Pest Control: In case of mice, cockroach or other pest problems, you can try to take care of them yourself by using traps or loose powder; make sure to take into consideration any pets you have and their safety when using such methods. If it’s beyond your control, seek professional help by means of a pest control company.
